THE COMMITTEE:            The Committee of Hastings Group Riding for the Disabled met for the AGM on March 30th and the following officers have been elected:- President: Murray Revell Secretary: Sharon Goldsworthy Treasurer: Mike Batey

Committee Members: Kerry Whiley, Megan Harvey, Margaret Dippenaar, Jill Carpenter, Shona Brown, Margaret Revell and Anna Soutar.

Thank you to Anne Heal of Gillick & Co for producing and auditing the annual accounts.

The Committee meet every two months to facilitate the running of Hastings RDA and the next Committee meeting is on June 15th.  The Committee would love to hear from some potential new Members if you would like to join this wonderful group of people please contact our Secretary Sharon Goldsworthy (06) 878 6522 or by email hastingsrda@clear.net.nz it would be great to have a parent of a rider on board.

OUR RIDERS:         Welcome back to our riders, everybody is going to have to work very hard in Term 2 to outdo the amazing progress they made in Term 1.  Two of our riders are changing riding times this Term and we will be welcoming one new rider on Tuesday and a new rider with the Thursday Kowhai School Group.  We do still have a waiting list and would love to get everybody riding but need more volunteers to make this a safe option.

VOLUNTEERS & HELPERS:          Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who have put in extra hours and effort this Term to help our riders reach their goals, it has been inspiring.  Thank you for then putting in more effort and helping with the Street Collection and Name the Pony and to everybody who has helped with the ponies during the holiday’s thank you.  It was great to catch up with Rachel again and to welcome James who is doing his Community Service for his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

Congratulations to our Tuesday volunteer Keli the arrival of her baby, we know you will be back with us as soon as you can!

Hastings RDA is also short of volunteers due to the upswing in the Hawke’s Bay economy, several of our volunteers have had to step down as their own businesses or those they are working for have grown and require their attention. So if you or anybody you know can spare a morning or just a couple of hours to help it would take the pressure off our current volunteers and allow us to get riders off the waiting list and into the programme.

THE HORSES AND PONIES:               A very big thank you to Gavin Clements for loaning us the amazing Socks for Term 1, we would have loved to have kept this energetic mare but she has gone home to the family who love her – they have said we can borrow her if we are in need again, their plan is to breed from her. We shall have to put our names down for one of her foals J

While Socks was in the riding programme we were busy training our new horse Duke, he is a beautiful big paint gelding with an amazingly kind nature who takes everything in his long stride and we look forward to seeing him starting work in the arena with riders in Term 2.

Thank you also to Heather Dixon who came in during the holidays to clip Enya and Misty, wow they were furry!  They look amazing now and are feeling much more comfortable.

FUNDRAISING & DONATIONS:           Term 1 was a very busy time for our Committee and Fund Raising Teams a big thank you to everybody who gave time to help Hastings RDA.

Coleen Davey organised the Street Collection on Thursday 14th April thank you to HBS Bank in Hastings, and all our collectors. We are looking at ways to make our collectors more noticeable, either with different signs or new logos on the buckets, thank you to everybody who has offered suggestions.  Thank you to all the local businesses who allowed us to collect outside their premises: - New World Hastings, The Warehouse, Mitre 10 Mega, F W Liley, AMI, the iSite, Countdown, the Post Shop, Peter Dunkerly Chemist and New World Havelock North and Gilmours Chemist.

Although Hastings RDA was unable to hold a Fun Day this year there is a Name the Pony competition, thank you to Kerry Whiley for producing another lovely pony.  We had a morning at the Farmers Market and had lots of guesses there but there is still room on the board for anybody who would like to win.  Huge thank you to the lovely people at the Farmers Market for providing us with a marquee, we managed to catch up with past riders and their families and volunteers from Auckland and Wellington RDA’s who were on holiday in Hawke’s Bay.

RDA Awareness week is the first week in August, the Gingerbread horse campaign will be on again and we will get the information out to you as soon as possible.

Have a great Term 2 J

TERM 4 2015

DATES FOR YOUR DIARIES

There is no riding during the second week of Term 19th – 23rd of October as 11 lucky riders are competing at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Show on Wednesday 21st and the horses and ponies will be at the hairdressers on the Tuesday and lying down in their paddocks on the Thursday recovering.

There will be no riding during the fourth week of Term Tuesday 3rd – Friday 6th November as all the horses and ponies will be away for a week to avoid them being scared by the barrage of fireworks and hurting themselves.

The riders End of Year Certificate Party will be on Monday 14th December at 11am, the riding Term ends on Friday 11th of December.

RIDERS

Congratulations to our riders who took part in the Napier RDA Dressage Day, Mitchell, Chimera, Jayden, Olivia and Neva, they all came away with beautiful ribbons and there were a couple of cups as well. The judge Judith Buckeridge made some lovely comments about our riders and ponies.

If you are bringing a rider to the A&P Show a letter will be coming your way soon with tickets and directions, let’s all cross our fingers early and hope the weather is kind.

Summer is coming and hopefully we will be able to ride in the paddock some of the time so remember your sun block.  Also please can our riders wear long stretch trousers where possible and no sandals please we do have some spare boots but not all sizes.

Hastings RDA regrets we won’t be holding a ribbon day this Term we have some concerns about things taking place on neighbouring properties which may make riding in the paddocks unsafe, hopefully in the future ribbons days can take place again.

VOLUNTEERS

We look forward to welcoming you back in Term 4, thank you to all of you who worked so hard through the sometimes not so nice weather of Term 3 to help our riders and look after the ponies. Thank you also to all those who came in during the holidays and helped with our Holiday Programme.

The date and venue of the Volunteers End of Year Party has yet to be fixed, more news soon.

Our Coaches Shona Brown & Jill Carpenter are now NZRDA Health & Safety trainers and Brenda Hope and Ruth Holmes have attended a Health & Safety Training Day at Napier RDA led by them.  All volunteers will receive training on the new Health & Safety requirements during Term 4.  Lucy is attending NZRDA training at Marlborough RDA during October with the wonderful International Coach Mary Longden.

HORSES AND PONIES

The ponies have all enjoyed their holidays, the last week of Term 3 wasn’t much fun for them and kept the staff and volunteers busy changing rugs to keep the ponies dry and well.  They have loved all their extra grooming to help their winter coats come out, a big thank you to Heather Dixon who clipped Misty for us – Misty like so many grey ponies loves rolling, we thought we would never get her clean and dry for the Dressage Day however with lots of brushing and some shampoo she looked great.

The rain has made the grass grow which they think is wonderful and on the warmer days they have all enjoyed rolling in the mud and sleeping with tums full of grass.  They will all be on diets soon!

FUNDING AND DONATIONS

Thank you to everybody who made Gingerbread Horses for Awareness Week, there were some wonderfully decorated ponies being sold in all sorts of places round Hastings and Havelock North, and thank you to everybody who helped sell them at the Countdown.  The dollars are being added up and we should know the final numbers at the end of October. If you haven’t sent your money in make sure you do it soon.

Mums on a Mission (Black Team) joined in with the Gingerbread Horse campaign and also did loads of other fundraising for Hastings RDA which was really appreciated.

Thank you also to James McPhail who decided to make and sell muffins instead and give Hastings RDA a great donation.

Thank you to Topstock International for providing our horses and ponies great feed supplement that keeps them all looking so well and for top dressing our paddocks for us, your products are fantastic.

A huge thank you to WaterForce for replacing all the worn out sprinkler heads on the arena irrigation system, what a generous company.

We have received a grant from the Community Organisation Grants Scheme, thank you so much.

The Heretaunga Building Society have renewed their sponsorship of Tonto which he thinks is great, extra carrots!

Thank you to the Lioness Club of Havelock North for a lovely donation.

Thank you to everybody who has made donations to support the riding programme during Term 3 especially all the people who have left donations for bags of horse manure, including the pot of chutney – yum!

Have a lovely Term

Kind Regards from Ruth and the Team

** HORSES & PONIES **

Our horses and ponies enjoyed their Christmas and New Year holiday’s thank you to Jill and Garth Carpenter for hosting them they all came back to RDA looking really relaxed.  Since then our wonderful volunteers have bathed and trimmed them and got them back into work ready for the start of Term 1. At the end of Term 4 Sophie retired back to her owners and is now enjoying some one on one time with her “girls”.  We have been looking for a replacement pony for some months, it is very hard to find ponies with the experience and temperament and soundness we need for RDA work and we are lucky to have found Coco, however she is bigger than we were originally looking for and we are still looking for a suitable smaller pony. Coco will be training at the start of Term 1 and should be ready for her first riders very soon.
